Facebook users and proud owners of smart phones came across Words With Friends at least once in their digital life. This Scrabble-like game is one of the most famous word games on the internet since it is played by millions of people around the word. Here are two questions that provide a short insight into the rules of this fantastic game: How many letter tiles are available? and How does the point system works?

How many letter tiles are available in Words With Friends?

All in all there are 104 letters in Words With Friends. 102 tiles are displaying the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Additionally, there are two tiles that can replace one of these letters from the alphabet each. Below you can find the distribution of letters:

A=9

D=5

G=3

J=1

M=2

P=2

S=5

V=2

Y=2

B=2

E=13

H=4

K=1

N=5

Q=1

T=7

W=2

Z=1

C=2

F=2

I=8

L=4

O=8

R=6

U=4

X=1

*=2

How does the Words With Friends point system works?

Placing your seven provided tiles on the board game will gain you points. However, first of all you have to make a word with these letters. Since every letter has a certain value (e.g. Z earns you 10 points or A earns you 1 point) a short word may sum up to a higher value than a longer word. The word LEARN has a total value of 7 points. If you make a word with the letters Z, or J, for example JAZZ, you will receive more than twice of the points as for LEARN, though JAZZ is shorter but more valuable. See the letter point relation below:

A=1

D=2

G=3

J=10

M=4

P=4

S=1

V=5

Y=3

B=4

E=1

H=3

K=5

N=2

Q=10

T=1

W=4

Z=10

C=4

F=4

I=1

L=2

O=1

R=1

U=2

X=8

*=0

There are also premium squares on the board:

DL=Double Letter,
TL=Triple Letter,
DW=Double Word, and
TW=Triple Word.

This feature can boost your score to a much higher amount and will bring you closer to win Words With Friends.
Another possibility to earn points in Words With Friends occurs whenever a player uses all 7 tiles on their rack in a single turn. 35 points will be rewarded.

If there is this frustrating moment in a game where you ask yourself How the hell do I make a word with these letters? – On our page you find a Words With Friends helper. To find words for the popular word game Words With Friends you simply type in the letters. You can optimize the results of the Words With Friends cheat using a pattern the results should fit in or choosing one of the options like the number of blank tiles. For detailed information you can also visit the Scrabble helper instructions describing the same functionalities.

Some friends of mine recently surprised me with a very nice gadget they developed to get pictures from Twitter. They called it Sammlr from the German word for collector = Sammler. Sammlr is not really useful, but pretty and I am definitely thinking about embedding it on the front page of word-grabber.com.

What does Sammlr do?

Sammlr does collect pictures from Twitter and creates a slideshow out of it. The limitation or feature (as you like to see it) is that is only gets the most recent pictures like as if you would search directly on twitter. So every time you come back to this page the following slide presentation will be updated and you can enjoy some other pictures. The Sammlr I created collects pictures connected with Scrabble.

As you see, the original iframe is bigger than the weblayout on word-grabber. This is probably going to fit in the new layout.

You can create your own Sammlr, but so far the website is only available in German. But actually it is self-explanatory so just try the input and register over there on sammlr.com.

Feel free to use my slideshow that you can access on http://sammlr.com/webzunft/scrabble.

The world’s most famous word game, Scrabble, fills millions of people with enthusiasm and joy of playing. However, sometimes it can lead to brutal family disputes, fatal break-ups, or just endless discussions. To avoid these why not get yourself a printed Scrabble dictionary to have the truth in black and white? Here we want to present you some recommendable Scrabble dictionaries.

Collins Official Scrabble Words

This hardcover book claims to be the most comprehensive Scrabble wordlist ever, including World English from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, UK, and USA brought together in a single list. This edition contains more than a quarter of a million permissible words. Thus Collins Official SCRABBLE Words is one of the most comprehensive Scrabble dictionaries. No more fighting over permitted words and correct spellings. This book will definitely help you cutting down the even most controversial discussions.

Collins Official Scrabble Lists

If you need a Scrabble dictionary to learn lists and be prepared winning the even hardest tournaments the Collins Official SCRABBLE Lists should be suitable for you. You can find word lists sorted by length and by type. There are also lists of useful suffixes, prefixes, anagrams, unusual letter combinations, and high-scoring words. It will help you learning groups of words easily and spot every opportunity to maximize your Scrabble score.

To promote these two Scrabble dictionaries, the Collins Official SCRABBLE Words and Collins Official SCRABBLE Lists, they collected different winning words in their advertising film:

Everything Scrabble

To have a more handy version of a Scrabble dictionary we recommend the paperback book Everything Scrabble. It is not a complete Scrabble dictionary containing all words that can be played in this game, but it contains some valuable lists. From high scoring words to a complete two-letter word list. Also lists occupying with the letters Q or QU can be found in that book. Additionally, readers can track back the history of Scrabble, get facts on Scrabble cultures all over the world, or learn some useful game strategies. Probably a must have for all Scrabble addicts.

The Scrabble Word-Building Book

Again this Scrabble dictionary doesn’t claim to be complete but seems to have all necessary Scrabble lists. Including a handy list of the 94 two-letter words to pile on the points, over 800 three-letter words with 550 that can be formed from two-letter words, or all eight-letter words that can be formed from seven-letter words. The Scrabble Word-Building Book maybe a book for all professionals but should be useful for every hobby Scrabbler that wants to improve his skills as well.

Another fast and easy way to avoid discussions is our Scrabble Helper. Just type in the word you want to check.

Both versions don’t origin from the creators of Word Mole for Blackberry, but after so many of you desperately searched for a Word Mole on Apple devices, we gave it a try. Our conclusion was less than happy. Too many bugs and issues and just not the feeling of the “real thing”. We wanted to test how amazed you are by this implementation of the Word Mole game and started the following poll.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Word Mole for iPhone maybe not that bad

As you can see, many of you share our conclusion. Almost half of you felt the same like we did. But even though this was not the most enthusiastic response one can count 70% of participants trying Word Game for iPhone with a more positive experience. Only 22% found it to be a fake and a very small number of 8% had problems playing it at all. This is not the worse feedback on Word Mole for iPhone, but still not good enough to promote the game.

You can decide for yourself if Word Mole for iPhone is worth a try. If you so far searched like crazy for a Word Mole version on Apple’s mobile devices, this might definitely help you. If you are sceptic about what to upload on your smartphone, stay away from it.

This word game consists of 144 letter tiles packed in a banana shaped bag. Similar to Scrabble you have to make words from letters but this time without a grid. Playing the game correctly you have to remember four words that needs to be shouted out during the game: Split, Peel, Dump and Bananas. Read the full instructions in our Board Games with Words Selection article.

You learn for life

Bananagrams brings both creativity and word knowledge. Especially children can try out what they have learned so far regarding spelling and vocabulary skills. When playing with children you can easily set a specific topic to promote and demand the spelling of words of a certain semantic field.
Adults prefer this game as well. It is often used as a learning summary in a session or workshop to repeat the key issues that were discussed earlier.
Learn for life and train with our Letter Sorting tool.

Bananagrams is better than Scrabble

Unlike Scrabble, you play somewhat independently and are able to rearrange words constantly to make your letters fit and to create new words. There is a variety of ways you can play Bananagrams. You can use three or four sets for a large “extended” family game or you can give bonus points at the end of each for the most creative word, longest word, etc. The best is, you don’t need to wait for your turn since everyone plays by himself simultaneously. Another advantage is that the words you build don’t have to fit into any particular pattern. No grid limits your creativeness in word forming.

Easy to carry with you

Wherever you go it is easy to take it with you. It fits in a puts, backpack, or car glove box. A great game to travel with, play in hotel, at pool, on plane, keep kids busy at restaurant while waiting for dinner! The only thing you need when playing the game is a table or other plain surfaces.

Good to socialize with other people

Building words from letters can be nine times out of ten funny, sometimes frustrating, but always socializing. Whether you play with friends, your family, or completely strangers, Bananagrams breaks the ice in nearly every situation. It’s simpleness stills fears not to understand the game and invites anyone to join a group who is playing Bananagrams.

Convinced of this simple but addicting game? Just click to order it from Amazon.

I started working on a new layout for www.word-grabber.com right after you surprised me with raising visits in December 2011. As you can still see, I am not a layouter, so I wasn’t able to work on it alone. In addition, I also had the existing search algorithms to be rewritten to build a more powerful Scrabble Helper and the other new word searches. So, project “new layout” didn’t really develop fast. Finally, in the last week I started coding the new layout from the design and in this article I wanted to give you a sneak preview.

Articles and more Features

The reason for the new layout is simple. As you noticed, we added a content section with articles on word games or word trivia to add more value to word-grabber.com. We were amazed by the huge interest in our insights so we want to present this content in a way it deserves.

There are many other features on our list and the current layout offers neither space nor the concept of including them properly. Just think about the main navigation and the many useful links we had to hide in the sidebar (aka. “hidebar” ).

Have a look

And here you are. You can click on the image to see it in a bigger size. As you can see, there are some elements like the logo of the German twin site www.wort-suchen.de that still needs to be changed.

The new word-grabber.com layout in development status

Does the “Recent Post” box in the sidebar actually invite you to read the article? I think so and I’d now really love to bring more interesting word searches and content to word-grabber.com. It really makes fun to work with it.

What do you think? Would you miss the old layout? Does the new one catches your eye?

I already mentioned in my Wordfeud Helper article that Wordfeud on iPad really got me. I just wanted to share a screenshot from my iPad showing you how I started a recent game with two bonuses in the early rounds. I think I also got lucky and with MAINLINE and OUTLAWED I could have been able to accomplish this without the Wordfeud Cheat. Anyway, this was much faster
Now it is going to be a lot more difficult. I have ATXBGQT left on my rack. I am still waiting for my opponents move, but already prepared QAT on the board with Q on the triple letter field. It is always good to know two and three letter words that can serve you well.

my current game on Wordfeud iPad

Wordfeud Cheat doesn’t win the game alone

Btw, even though I pulled a bonus twice, my opponent played the word with the most points and this was even my fault. See AVIATOR on the left side? I prepared that one with my OUTLAWED and he was able to play over two triple word fields what nine-folded his points. So don’t switch off your brain while using our Wordfeud Cheat.

I am still ahead with 229 points against 166 points, but have to be more careful where to place my tiles. There are 44 tiles left, so plenty of opportunities.

Since I read Philipp’s article on the online and mobile word game Wordfeud, I wasn’t able to stop playing this game on my iPad. The only annoying thing is the reminder to purchase the paid version each time I played a word. Anyway, I got so dragged into that game that there was no question whether to start a Wordfeud Helper on word-grabber.com or not.

Wordfeud Helper is a Scrabble Helper

Due to the equal word lists TWL and SOWPODS, the Wordfeud Helper is working like the Scrabble Helper. Simply type in your letters and an optional pattern, choose the number of blank tiles and how to sort the results. You can also specify the word list to TWL (for the US, Canada and Thailand) or SOWPODS (for the rest of the world).

Like with our Scrabble Helper the Wordfeud Helper also offers further information in the result list. So you can quickly check the word in Wikipedia or Wiktionary or tweet your best result.

The Wordfeud Helper already helped me cheating on Wordfeud and to find words like MAINLINE or ANTIDOTE and so getting a nice 40 points bonus. I also learned the meaning of QAT, when I was finding myself in the well known position to have a Q without a U. So our helper is more like a Wordfeud Training than a Wordfeud Cheat

I just stumbled upon a new movie called QWERTY. The main supporting actor is the word game Scrabble. So, is this a Scrabble film?

QWERTY – a Scrabble film

The film just recently aired on April 15th 2012 at the Dallas International Film Festival. I am not sure when it will come to the US theatres and I am afraid it won’t jump over to Europe.
The comedy is produced by Bill Sebastian. Main characters are Dana Pupkin, Eric Hailey and Bill Redding.

From the trailer I can only review that this is kind of a low budget romance / comedy that looks promising not only for Scrabble enthusiasts. See for yourself in the trailer.

You can also visit the official website of QWERTY – the movie.

Unfortunately, I am not able to see the movie here in Europe, so I can only review some other articles about it. Below you find one of the best parts I found in a review to this film.

Bill Sebastian’s film is centered around a self-proclaimed “word nerd” named Zoe, who has the absolute best job ever– translating vanity plate requests for the state of Illinois to make sure they aren’t naughty words. The movie starts out with the vanity plate request “Tohzah,” which turns out to be the Klingon version of the F-word. Brilliant….

Have you already seen QWERTY – the movie? I would love to read your opinion about this film in our comments.

Learning obscure words is a sure way to improve your Scrabble score and learning new words is not a trauchle (boring, hard, tiring work). Since the letter T has been determined to be the second-most frequently used letter in English words, right after E, it is important to have many words with T ready to go in your mind. You may find that learning words in trines (groups of three) will make them easier to remember. Players who have a traulism (problem with mispronouncing words, such as lisping or stuttering), will want to check their favorite dictionary or reference site to practice correct pronunciation. If your next Scrabble game is hosted in a topek (traditional home in Alaska or lower Yukon made of rock, skin, wood or other things besides snow and ice), bring along your tuque (heavy cap usually with a tassel) to keep your tragus (cartilage part of the ear that partially covers the opening to the ear canal) warm so you enjoy the tenuto (a note or chord that is held for its full value) if a friend plays music during the break between games. If a tur (large wild ox) wanders by, stay focused on your game and keep your letters lined up to a twip (1/1440th of an inch) to help you stay organized. Be sure that you don’t tope (drink to excess) or your score is bound to be lower than you’d like. By following these simple suggestions, you’ll soon by on your way to improving your Scrabble score.
